Waddow Hall

22 of us enjoyed a super weekend at Waddow Hall.  Our tutors were Julia Triston for Contemporary Collage and Fay Maxwell for Crewel and Unusual.  We worked hard, played hard, had lots of fun and laughs!  If you haven't been on one of our weekends put October 12th - 14th 2018 in your diary!

Silk should be ‘Dupion’ or upholstery weight (scarf weight is too thin).

Designs can be taken from bedroom curtains or the pattern in a carpet.  These we can adapt.

contemporary collage: mixing media for stitch

‘creative exploration with mono-printing, found objects, repurposed textiles, hand and machine stitch; to build a series of samples, or one resolved piece’

materials and equipment list

You will be encouraged to work with your materials and be inspired by their textures and memories, to produce an abstract textile collage or a series of smaller samples. But if you would like to feature or include a specific/personal theme (eg grids, landscapes, pattern, faces, flowers, circles....) you will need to bring along some references and sources of inspiration, such as photos, drawings, postcards, magazine cuttings, stencils, print blocks etc.

Please bring along the following: (we have candles and olive oil for everyone)

• sketchbook – about A5 size (could be smaller or larger, or squarer!) 
• pen, pencils and a fine liner – preferably black 
• paper scissors, craft knife, cutting mat and metal ruler 
• pritt stick, masking tape and double sided tape 
• some old magazines for collage work 
• paraffin candle 
• tissue paper, or old dress making pattern 
• a range of papers (hand made, tracing, brown envelopes, recycled book 
  pages, wallpaper...) – only need small amounts 
• acrylic paints and brushes and palette and water pots (won’t use loads) 
• apron, plastic to cover your tables and baby wipes to clean surfaces 
• stapler and staples 
• print blocks (optional) or could bring some mount board and funky foam to 
  make your own 
• found/recycled objects (feathers, rusty washers, small pieces of driftwood....) 
• a sewing machine and accessories (optional if you prefer hand stitching, but 
  can be quicker for construction) 
• an embroidery hoop (about 8”) 
• spare machine needles (size 80s are most useful) and bobbins 
• assorted machine threads 
• assorted hand embroidery threads 
• pins, needles and stitch ripper 
• scissors for fabric and threads 
• bondaweb and baking parchment paper (silicone based) 
• neutral fabrics (eg calico, cotton, linen, lace) – small pieces and scraps 
• old clothing to deconstruct (eg pair of jeans, sunhat, bra, 
• two or three items of clothing or household linen (eg a blouse, tray cloth, bra, 
  scarf, skirt) to deconstruct* - these are more useful if they have interesting 
  features (eg straps, buttons, pin tucks, embroidered motifs, tears, labels....) 
• embellishments (eg buttons, ribbons, wire, string, clips, eyelets, fancy pins, ...) 
• a camera can be a useful tool to record your working process 
  
  *any of these items can be purchased from a charity shop if you find it too personal to use your own textiles

  There will be a few things we need as a group that are not on the list - e.g. irons and ironing surfaces (boards or towels) and newspapers to lay drying work on. A hairdryer can be useful to speed up the drying time of work but is not essential. And one bottle of (cheap) olive oil between the group would be useful too.

We'll be stitching in St. Luke's at Swirly's on Saturday August 6th from 10 - 3, do pop in if you can.  We are celebrating National Stitch Day and also hoping to introduce more people to Swirly's café which is run by and for St. Luke's Hospice.  Hope to see you there,
